Harnai Beach, Harnai, Dapoli Taluka, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India
1 / 2Harnai is less a bathing beach and more a living, breathing fishing harbour, and that is exactly its appeal. Every evening the boats come in and the shore erupts into a famous open-air fish auction, where baskets of pomfret, prawns, lobster and the day's catch are sold in a fast, colourful spectacle you will not see at any resort. History rises straight out of the water here: Suvarnadurg, the golden sea fort, sits on an island offshore, while Kanakdurg and Fattehgad guard the mainland, and local boats will ferry you across to explore. The narrow harbour lanes are chaotic and pungent, so Harnai rewards curious travellers and photographers more than sunbathers. Come at dusk for the auction, hire a boat by day for the forts, and taste seafood as fresh as it gets. It is about 17 km from Dapoli, easily paired with Anjarle and its clifftop Ganpati. Visit October to March, wear sturdy footwear for the working port, and keep your camera ready for one of the Konkan's most authentic coastal scenes.
