Kanakeshwar Devasthan

Kanakeshwar Devasthan is Alibaug's most revered temple and its finest trek, a hilltop shrine to Lord Shiva perched some 900 feet up amid dense forest. Reaching it means climbing roughly 700 to 750 well-paved stone steps, an hour's ascent past landmarks like the tombs of Mohan Giri and Balgiri, the Nagoba rest and the Jambhali plateau, with gurgling streams and birdsong for company. The fatigue melts away at the top, where a serene 54-foot temple, built long ago by Raja Ramdeorai Yadav, stands guarded by lion sculptures and traditional deepmaal lamp pillars. Within the peaceful premises are smaller shrines to Paleshwar, Hanuman, Balram, Krishna and Ganesh, and an ancient sweet-water tank enclosed in red stone. The panoramic views over forest and coast make the climb doubly rewarding, drawing both pilgrims and nature lovers. Located about 12 to 13 km from Alibaug, it is best attempted in the cool October to March months. Start early to beat the heat, wear good grip shoes, and carry water for one of the coast's most uplifting temple treks.
