Birla Ganesh Temple (Salav)

The Birla temple at Salav, built by the Birla family, is a serene white-stone shrine that gleams above the coastal plain across the Revdanda bridge, about 38 km from Alibaug. Its towering dome in exquisite white granite is visible from a distance and makes an immediate impression, a graceful blend of traditional temple form and modern craftsmanship set within landscaped grounds. The temple is unusual for its three sacred tanks, the parjanyakund, agnikund and wayukund, representing the elements of rain, fire and air, and its premises also include a Nagaar-khana, a Bheem Kunda, a garden for flowers offered to the deity, a Sri Ram Ganesh temple and a gomukha. Peaceful and beautifully kept, it draws pilgrims and admirers of temple architecture alike, and the annual Kartik Poornima fair is a highlight. Set within an industrial township, it offers a calm, contemplative pause. Visit in the pleasant October to March season, dress modestly, and allow time to appreciate the white marble detailing and the three elemental kunds that make this temple distinctive.
