Suvarnadurg Fort

Rising straight out of the Arabian Sea off Harnai, Suvarnadurg is the golden fort that once guarded this stretch of the Konkan coast. Its name means Golden Fort, and it was a significant naval base during the Maratha Empire, part of a defensive system that included the mainland forts of Kanakdurg and Fattehgad. Reaching it is an adventure in itself: you hire a local fishing boat from Harnai port and cross the choppy water to land on an island ringed by high stone walls. Inside, weathered ramparts, bastions and hidden passages tell of a time when sea power decided the fate of the coast. The fort is largely in ruins, so this is a trip for history lovers, photographers and the adventurous rather than for creature comforts. The boat ride, the salt spray and the sudden appearance of the walls make it one of Dapoli's most memorable experiences. Visit in the calm October to March season when the sea allows boats to run, fix your fare and return time before setting off, and wear sturdy shoes for the rocky landing and walls.
