Our stay at the Tarkarli Beach House was a mixed experience. Initially, after reading the first review, we booked the property on Airbnb for a 10-night stay with the hope of enjoying the proximity to the sea and immersing ourselves in the local culture. The host, who resides in Mumbai, had his brother, Mr. Radhakrishnan, hand us the keys upon arrival. The house was situated under coconut trees, a few steps away from both the river and the sea. The location, nestled in a quiet fisherman's village, was surrounded by other homestays. The setting was idyllic and had the potential for a perfect beachside retreat. However, upon entering the room, we encountered cleanliness issues, including hair on the floor and bed, as well as some water leakage. My 12-year-old son took it upon himself to clean the room without us asking him to. After two nights, the host offered to clean the room, but we declined the offer due to the initial cleanliness concerns. Throughout our stay, we ended up cleaning the room ourselves daily and making do with the room's condition. It's worth noting that not all the amenities listed on Airbnb were available to us, including TV, blankets, and breakfast. The shower head had low water pressure, and mosquitoes were a concern, so we had to keep the windows closed. Bringing mosquito repellent is advisable. Although there was no Wi-Fi, we found Jio 5G to be active in the area, providing decent internet speeds. For those planning a long-term stay, it's important to note that there is no kitchen in the room, and meals from outside establishments can be expensive. Despite prior discussions with the host about using his home kitchen, we were asked to pay an unspecified extra amount upon arrival, which was a disappointment. On the positive side, the water supply was reliable, with hot water available from a geyser, although we opted for cold water baths. The phone charging points worked perfectly, but power cuts were a recurring issue. When the fan button fell off the wall during our stay, the host arranged for a tower fan, which was a lifesaver given the hot climate. In summary, our stay at the Tarkarli Beach House felt more like renting a room than having an authentic Airbnb experience where you connect with a local family. Despite the initial challenges, the location provided opportunities to witness stunning sunrises by the river and serene sunsets by the sea. We had a chance to experience the daily life of the local fishermen, from preparing nets to boxing fish in ice-filled containers. Various watersports activities, such as scuba diving, parasailing, boating, and jet skiing, were easily accessible in the vicinity. Ultimately, our stay was a blend of both positive and negative aspects, and it largely depended on our ability to adapt to the situation and make the most of the beautiful surroundings and local experiences.
